Basic Skills Assessment

Basic Skills Assessment

Florida statute requires public technical colleges to assess students’ basic skills within the first six weeks of enrollment. This assessment is used to determine whether the student presently demonstrates the basic skills necessary to successfully complete their program of study and earn their industry certification(s) or license. Basic skills scores may also help to identify the most suitable program(s) for students and/or identify areas where skill remediation is needed.

Cape Coral Technical College encourages students to complete their basic skills assessment prior to their first day of class. Standard assessment tools include ACT, PSAT, SAT, TABE, and CASAS Goals 900. Scores must be no older than two years as of the program start date. The CASAS Goals 900 is available at Cape Coral Technical College for a nominal fee.improve.

Basic Skills Assessment Exemption

If a student previously earned an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution or has recently graduated from an accredited Florida public/private high school, or from an accredited home education program, then basic skills testing may not be required.

Please provide official transcripts or, in the case of home educated students, a notarized affidavit of home school completion.

BASIC SKILLS TEST RETEST POLICY

Students requiring remediation based on the test results will follow this policy:

If students choose to participate in remediation:

  1. Students need to register/enroll in the Applied Academics for Adult Education (Learning Center) at FMTC, Cape Coral Technical College, or Adult Education.
  2. An individual study program will be developed.
  3. Upon completion of remediation, the student will retest in the Learning Center.
  4. Cell phones, pagers, or electronic devices of any type are NOT allowed in any testing session

OR

Students will be allowed to retest without remediation ONE time, the test may be taken no sooner than one week from the original test date. If the student is not successful on the retest, the student will enroll in remediation or show proof of remediation before another test will be granted.

Basic Skills Test Skills Remediation

Remediation for career classes requires enrollment in an Applied Academics course

  • The cost is $30 – must register in the front office with an Admissions Specialist
  • Instruction is individualized per each student’s results
  • Mondays and Tuesdays 2:45-4:00

Specific scores are required for application to certain programs or in order to successfully complete a program (see individual program pages). In an effort to avoid over-whelming students enrolled in career classes, we recommend that students complete testing and upgrading prior to career enrollment.

You may not be required to take the basic skills test if you graduated from a Florida public high school in 2007 or later with a standard diploma, passed the GED 2014, if you are active duty U.S. military, or you have earned a college degree. Meet with the student services to see if you qualify for the exemption.
